T シャツプロジェクト、角 – T-Shirt Project – Corner

このプロジェクトを始める前に、ウェブでキルトの作り方をせっせと検索して学習しましたが、面倒臭いとか諸事情により、途中から自我流に切り替えました。終わりよければいいよ。I studied enough about quilt making via numerous websites before I started the project. I tried following the proper methods, but switched to my own ways because my quilt situation didn’t allow me to do so. As long as the end result is good, that’s good enough for me.

私の方法は、裏布を折り返して端の処理をするというもの。The final process is edging. I decided to fold the back and cotton mid layer on top layer.

角の処理が一番気になる所なので、しっかり線を引きました。The corner management was the most critical handling, so I marked lines on the back fabric.

綺麗にカットして、前に折り曲げて、仮縫いをしました。I cut the excess corner fabric, folded precisely, and basted them.

ピンでしっかりと留めて、角が綺麗になるように確認もして、ミシンがけ開始です。I pinned the corner fabric after folding the corner cleanly.

こんなに頑張っても、こんなふうに隙間が開いてしまいました。計画通りにはいかない物ですね。Although I tried very hard to make nice corners, see below pictures, it didn’t work well.

でも大丈夫。こうしてかがめば問題なしね。角処理、終了！But I know that I can fake it with blind stitching. Done for the corners!

後ほんの一歩で完成だよ〜! There is only one more step to complete the project!!!

T シャツプロジェクト、貼りつける – T-Shirt Project – Glue

全ての T シャツパネルを繋ぎ合わせると、予想外に大きなキルトになってしまいました。クイーンサイズベッドの横幅と同じぐらい。ここから表布と裏布、その中に綿のバッティングを入れて固定するサンドイッチ作業に入ります。ピンで止めることはもちろんできます。でも、大きなサイズだから、結局ぐちゃぐちゃになりそうだし・・・と思案していました。It became quite large when I sewed all the T-shirt panels together, like a queen size bed. From here, I will move to the next step, make a sandwich with the back fabric, cotton batting, and front fabric together. Of course, I will use pins to hold it together, but I really wonder if it won’t hold and stay positioned together because the size of the quilt is so large. I wave been wondering what I can do for it for a long time.

が、「貼り付け」をすればいいんじゃん？と、ヒラメキがありました。But then, a brilliant idea popped up one day. “Why don’t I glue them together?”

まず、裏布を大きなテーブルに貼り付けてスタート。もちろん、横幅全部をカバーできないんですが、いいことにしました。少しずつ、バッティングを裏布にスプレー糊で貼り付けて、貼り付け終わった部分からクルクルと巻いていって、少しずつ、布を移動させる。この繰り返しです。I securely taped the back fabric on a large table first. The table wasn’t large enough, but that’s ok. I sprayed the glue on the back fabric, then carefully laid the batting on it. Once it dried, I rolled the glued section and moved to the next section a little at a time.

表布も同じようにして少しずつ貼り付けました。Then I did the same for the front fabric. Again, carefully, and little at a time.

糊がサンドイッチを固定してくれているという安心感が次のステップに進む勇気を与えてくれました。I don’t know if this glue method is a good way to do it or not, but it gave me a sense of courage to move on to the next step, because my sandwich quilt is now together and solid.

T シャツプロジェクト、その後 – T-Shirt Project Since Then

もう着なくなったTシャツ、でも捨てがたいTシャツ。それを集めてキルトプロジェクトを始めたのは1ヶ月前の事です。ようやく全てのピースを縫い合わせました。What do you do with old T-shirts that you don’t wear anymore, yet are hard to let go of? I started the T-shirt project a month ago, because it’s a wonderful idea to solve the question. And now, I have put all the odd pieces together.

端が不揃いだったので、余り布でかこいました。そして下の写真のように、裏布用に準備した古いシーツを下に敷いてみました。なんとなく雰囲気が出てきた感じ。まあ、自分の為だけに作ってるんだから、こんなもんでいいとしますかね。I added a border with leftover fabric to even out the edges. See below picture. I laid out the backing fabric made from an old sheet on the floor, then the front T-shirt layer on top. I guess it shows well enough what I wanted to achieve. After all, no one wants it other than myself as memorabilia. This is good enough.

この後、綿を入れてキルトサンドイッチを作ります。表、中、そして裏をシワを作らず留める作業は、全行程の要かもしれません。それが終わったら初めてチクチク縫い始める作業にとりかかれます。先は長い。So the next step is to insert a cotton batting in between the front and back fabrics, and make a sandwich. The more I learned about quilting, I realize it’s possibly the most critical step in the entire process. Now I can start quilting with a needle and a thread. It’s still a long way to go to completion.

去年からずーっと考えていたんですが、なかなか行動に移せませんでした。でも、今日は風が強くて寒いし、バンちゃんもいない事だしということで、Tシャツキルトのプロジェクト開始となりました。 I’ve been thinking about this project since last year, but couldn’t get started for some reason. It is such a windy day, however, and Banchan is not home, so I decided to get started the T-shirt quilt project.

カリフォルニアから引っ越してくる前にずいぶん処分しましたが、思い出が深くて捨てきれなかった物もありました。特にガラパゴス諸島で買ってきたブルーフットブービーとは別れ難い。Many shirts went to donation even before we moved out from California, but I couldn’t let go of some of the shirts like my Blue-footed booby shirt from the Galapagos Islands.

でも、箪笥の中が限界です。一気にシャキシャキ。But now my drawers are fully packed again and I have to say good-bye to some more of them.

切ったシャツをちょっと並べてアイディア探し。So first, I laid out all the pieces and brainstormed. 

だんだん完成図が見えて来ました。Yes, yes, it’s coming. The image that I am looking for is clearer now.

えーっと、サイズを揃えるところが難しそう。でも、もう一度並べ替えてできそうな事がわかったので、今日はここまで。Hmmm, it could be difficult to make all pieces the same size. I sorted and laid them out again. There, it looks so much better. This is it. Well-done for the day.  

次はアイロンをかけて、サイズを揃えて裁断していきます。完成目標は年内です。定年退職してからやる事いっぱいですからね。ゆるゆる進みます。（笑）The next step should be ironing, then cutting pieces again to fit into my plan. The target completion is the end of the year. I am a busy retired woman. I go slow. hahaha
