デナリ ハイウェイ（アラスカ8号線）は南北に走る東のアラスカ4号線と西の3号線の間を東西に走り連結する、全長217kmのハイウェイです。 Denali Highway (Alaska Route 8) is 135 miles in length, and runs between Alaska Route 4 on the east, and Alaska Route 3 on the west.

もともと、地図上中央にあるベルデスクリーク金鉱から物資を運ぶために作られた様ですが、現在はデナリ国立公園へのもう一つのルートとなりました。 It was made to carry things from and to Valdez Creek Gold Mine originally. But now it became another route to get to Denali National Park.

とはいえ、舗装されている部分とされていない部分とがあり、それほど整備されているわけではありません。 Having said that, the road is not very well maintained. It’s paved partially, and not paved partially.

その理由の一つには永久凍土があるからです。永久凍土とは一年中摂氏0度以下で、氷の様に固まっている土壌のことです。 One of the reasons why it’s rather wild is because of the Permafrost. Permafrost is frozen ground that doesn’t thaw even in the summer because the temperature is below freezing.

夏に0度以上になると部分的に融解し、その上に作られた舗装はぐにゃぐにゃになってしまうことになります。 During the summer, certain parts of the permafrost melts, breaking the pavement.

勿論、道路だけでなく、建物も被害を受けます。そのため、この地方の建物は永久凍土対策として杭を深く打ち込み、地面とは少し距離を置いて家を建てています。 Permafrost will destroy building foundations also. Therefore, people around this area build houses above the ground by anchoring poles deep in the ground.

タイガと時折見える永久凍土の融解によってできた水たまり。そして遠くに見える山々は、晴れていたら、さぞかし素晴らしい眺め立ったことでしょう。I am imagining that the view must be wonderful if it were a clear day with the spruce taiga forest, many ponds on the permafrost, and Alaska mountains in the background.

デルタジャンクションへの道が通行止めになってしまったために、急遽変更してローカルの小さなガコナというビール増醸所を訪れました。 We were told that the road to get to Delta Junction was closed. So we changed plans, and went to a beer brewing company, called Gakona.

種類は5種類あり、それぞれのウサギの絵がかわいい。 They have five different beer types, and a cute rabbit picture to represent each beer type.

特に2段目のビールは持ち帰りたかった。 I almost wanted to bring these beers home in the picture below.

客の一人が連れて来ていた犬までお店にピッタリな様相。バスの長旅を癒してくれました。 I found a dog in the shop leashed by one of the customers. He was perfect to be there in this shop. Beer and dog comforted me and removed the fatigue from the long bus ride.
