デナリは、標高6,190ｍ、北アメリカ大陸最高峰の山です。 Denali is the highest mountain in North America with elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m).

2015年から名称がマッキンレー山から、先住民族後のデナリに変更されました。面白いことに、このブログを書くにあたって調べていたら「デナリ山」と言わないで、ただ「デナリ」と呼んでいることに気付きました。私の勝手な想像ですが「デナリ」そのものが先住民族の言葉で「大きな山」を意味しているからでしょうか？ The name has changed since 2015 from Mt. McKinley to Denali. It was very interesting that when I was searching on the name, I found that people call it “Denali” rather than “Mt. Denali” or “Denali mountain”. I am not sure why but this is my guess. It is because “Denali” itself means “Big Mountain” in native Athabaskan language.

デナリが美しい姿を見せるのはとても稀で、年間70％は姿を隠しているという事です。 It is very rare that Denali reveals its beautiful mountain face. People say that you can’t see it at all about 70% of the time.

イエローストーン国立公園の2倍以上の広さを持つデナリ国立公園ですが、ビジターセンターはその北東に位置します。また、アクセス道路もほんの一部に限られていて、公園内はバスでしか移動できません。 Denali National Park is more than two times larger than Yellowstone National Park. The visitor center is located at the north east corner of the park, and there is only one main road going through the park but it has very limited access. On top of that, you can go on the road, past a short distance, only with the park buses.

そのため、公園の外には飛行機やヘリコプターの観光会社が軒を連ねてデナリツアーや氷河ツアーなどをしています。でも、事前の予約は必須です。 Therefore, there are many small private airplane and helicopter businesses right outside of the park. They can go close to Denali and the glaciers. It’s important to reserve the ride ahead of time.

私たちのデナリ滞在中は雨という天気予報でした。つまり、デナリを地上から見る事はほぼできない。だからホテルに荷を下ろすと、即、近くの飛行機観光会社に駆け込み、山の近くまで飛ばしてもらう予約をしました。雲の上からデナリを見られるかもしれないという希望が湧いてきました。 The weather forecast during our stay at Denali called for rain making it unlikely that we would see the mountain. So we went to a Denali airplane tour agency as soon as we dropped off our luggage at the hotel to hopefully get above the clouds to see the peak.

でも、残念ながら天候はますます悪化し、私たちのデナリツアーフライトは最後の最後まで待ってキャンセルとなりました。Unfortunately, the weather turned worse completely hiding the mountain in clouds, so our tour was canceled at the last minute.
