Cadence

This is the result from yesterday’s run. I planned to run only 8K but I ended up running 10K without even trying hard. Why was I able do that?

So then, I observed the result carefully and found that “Avg. Cadence” was very different. It was 163spm (Steps Per Minute) yesterday, but it was 141spm when I started running in January this year.

According to my web search result, the ideal rate is 180spm. If your cadence rate goes up, you can cover more distance, and the time to complete the same distance will be less.

And this is the most important fact. A higher cadence, rather than a longer stride length, will reduce the risk of injury. This is because a shorter stride length decreases the impact at the ankle, knee and hip joints.

Returning to my original question, the reason I was able to run at a higher cadence yesterday was because I listened to music with a higher tempo while I ran. So my legs moved faster with the music, increasing the cadence.

So this is my new goal, increase my cadence to 170+spm.
