私の部屋の窓からも見える山、ウェストマウンテン。ラジオタワーがたくさん建っている ので、遠くても見つけやすいです。思い立って行ってみることにしました。I can see the West Mountain peak from the window in my study. It is very far away, but I can recognize it because of the many radio towers on top.
前回チャレンジした時は、まだ雪がたくさん積もっていて危険だったので断念しました。今回は雪なし。バンちゃんの運転を信頼してはいるものの、急勾配と半端でない凸凹道で、私の体は硬直状態でした。We tried to go up there once in the past when it was still covered with snow, but gave up because it was way too dangerous to attempt on the snow. So we decided to go up there again. No snow was on the road this time. Although I trust Banchan’s driving, I was so nervous all the way to the top because the road was so steep and rough with big rocks and deep holes.
頂上に着くと視界はパッと開け、360度の絶景です。Once we got there, the 360 degree view opened up for us.
この近辺の高い山と言えば、パインバレー山脈 (3,159m) で今でも雪が残っています。ちょっと遠くのザイオン国立公園の一番高い山は 2,660m 。それに比べ、このウェストマウンテンは 2,107m 。高くはないですが、景色を阻む山は近くにありません。だからラジオ塔が立ってるんですね。Tall mountains around this area are, #1 Pine Valley Mountains (10,365 ft), #2 Zion NP’s tallest mountain (8,726 ft), #3 West Mountain (6,912 ft). West Mountain is not that tall in comparison to Pine Valley Mountains, but there are no other mountains blocking the spectacular view near it. That is why many radio towers were placed here.
下の写真は西の方角です。明るい色の砂丘のように見えるビーバーダムウォッシュ(Wash とは、雨季以外は枯れている川のこと）、その向こうにはベイスン アンド レンジ (Basin 盆地 and と Range 山）と言う、地殻変動によって作られた地形が広がっています。空中写真じゃなくてもわかる。すごいな！ここ、セイントジョージ一帯は、コロラド高原からベイスン アンド レンジに変わるちょうど境目です。この山はベイスン アンド レンジの壮大な地殻変動物語を目撃していたかもしれません。以下、物語を少し書きます。The picture below shows the west view. The light colored area is Beaver Dam Wash. Beyond that, the Basin and Range region spreads out all the way to California. That’s amazing that I can actually recognize the ground formations from here without seeing it from Sky. It is said that this mountain and St George area is called “the transitional area” positioned between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range. It means that this mountain could witness the grand story of the Basin and Range. Here is my very short version of the story.
昔々、北アメリカという大陸プレートは、西に移動していました（今でも年間 5-7cm 移動中）。その西側には、今は存在しないファラレンと言うプレートがありました。でも、ファラレンは西から太平洋プレートが押し寄せてきたので、仕方なく東に押されていきました。Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, the North American plate was moving westward. (it’s still moving towards the west about 2-3 inches per year.) Right next to the west side of the North American plate was the Farallon plate which doesn’t exist anymore. Because the Pacific plate started pushing the Farallon plate eastward, the Farallon plate had to move eastward.
その結果、必然的に北アメリカとファラレンの間に押し合いが始まります。その間、北アメリカの西への移動は止まらず、コロラド高原以西のベイスン アンド レンジとなる部分はギューっと西からも東からも圧迫されてシワシワ状態。それがある時、温度の低いファラレンが北アメリカの下に潜りだしたことによって緊張関係が解けました。As a result, naturally the North American and the Farallon plates were pushed into each other. During that time, many wrinkles were formed on the crust between the Colorado Plateau and the west edge of North American which became the Basin and Range region. Eventually, the Farallon plate went down under the North American plate, relieving the tension between them.
北アメリカの西側に溜まっていた圧力が弾け、シワシワが引き伸ばされ他ものの、一度できてしまった地表のシワは元には戻りません。山と盆地が波のうねりの様に続く場所として 1.7千万年間そのままの状態で今に至り、ベイスン アンド レンジと名付けられたのでした。おしまい。(注意：生成の理由、過程についてはまだ学者間で議論が続けられています。) Although the tension was gone and wrinkles were stretched, the crust couldn’t go back to the way it was. The wrinkled lines remain as basins and ranges for 17 million years to this date, and the area was named as Basin and Range. The End. (Important Note: The story was based on only my readings. How it was created is still controversial among scholars.)
高校の時にこんな景色を見ていたら、地学大好きを通り越して、地質学者にになっていたかもしれません。I wish I could see views like this when I was young. I could be a geologist if I did.
