化石の森国立公園はアリゾナ州北東に位置し、バッドランドと呼ばれる荒地にあります。Petrified Forest National Park mostly consists of badlands. It is located in northeastern Arizona.

ここはかつてパンゲア大陸の一部でした。その頃（ペルム紀から三畳紀の頃）は赤道直下にあり、熱帯雨林帯だったそうです。つまり、熱帯植物が繁殖していたということです。その後、火山活動で木々は火山灰に覆われて 2 億年もの間眠り続け、地殻変動を経て、今、化石化した木として 再び蘇りました。This area used to be a part of the continent of Pangaea (from the late Permian to the Triassic). The location at the time was around the equator. The climate was tropical rainforest. It means that many tropical plants grew around here. Then volcanic activity covered trees and plants with ash. The trees had slept for 200 million years since then. Many tectonic movements pushed the area upwards, and now the buried trees were exposed as petrified trees.

この公園の木は石化したことにより、二酸化ケイ素という物質になっているらしいです。それはどういう事なのでしょうか。The trees in this park are petrified. They became silicon dioxide aka silica. Why and how?

長い時の流れの中で火山灰が溶解して二酸化ケイ素になり、それが木の中に浸透して、名前が示す通り石英などになっていったという事です。During the long period of time, the ash covered trees dissolved and became silica. In other words, silica penetrated into the trees, and the trees became rocks such as quartz.

それにしてもこのケイ素、別名、シリコンは地球の元と言っても過言ではない元素ですよね。ケイ素なしには岩石はあり得ないわけですから。そしてシリコンは今でも重要な元素であらゆる分野で活躍していますよね。By the way, silicon is one of the key elements of earth, and no rock exists without silicon. On top of that, silicon is used in a variety of industries in the present time.

その日の夜、ホテルのベッドの中で、付き合いの長いシリコンのことを考えつつ、ペルム紀末には絶滅してしまった三葉虫の化石のことを考えていました。店で見た三葉虫も木と同じように二酸化ケイ素詰めになっているんだろうか？化石化するとはどういうことなのか。そして三葉虫を買わなかった事を深く後悔したのでした。I couldn’t sleep the night well. Maybe because I was thinking about silicon and Trilobites which went extinct at the end of the Permian period. I wondered whether the trilobite fossil I saw at the store, was also filled with silica or not. What’s the difference between “fossilized” and “petrified” anyway? Then, a feeling of regret attacked me so strongly. “Why didn’t I buy it?”

追記：英語における Fossilized の訳語は「化石化」Petrified の訳語は「石化」。混同して使われている場合が多いようです。化石がこの公園の木のように鉱物によって置き換えられた場合には石化と言います。石化は化石化した物の種類の一つです。だから、石化した木は化石化した木ですが、化石化した木は必ずしも石化した木とは言えません。

FYI: The words, “Fossilized” and “Petrified” are sometimes mixed up and misused. A fossil can be called “petrified” when a mineral replacement occurred like trees in the Petrified Forest National Park. So, we can say all petrified trees are fossilized trees, but we can not say all fossilized trees are “petrified trees” because petrification is only one of the processes to make fossils.
